It was breakfast time. The family was at the table and the baby was in his high chair. Everything the baby was given to eat was thrown over the side. The floor around the chair was a mess of toast and cereal. Finally, his father couldn't stand it any longer. He picked up a spoon and fed the baby a mouthful of food. To his disgust, the baby spat the food out.

He took the food and the spoon away, and turned back to his eggs and bacon. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the baby reaching out to him. A thought struck him. He gave the baby a spoonful of egg. This time the food was swallowed.

4. THE SPIRIT OF ST LOUIS

In 1919 a New York businessman offered a prize of $25 000 for the person who made the first nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean. Many people were interested, including Richard Byrd. He was well known for his expeditions to both the North and South Poles.

But it was Charles Lindbergh who made the first solo non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean from New York to Paris. He did this in his plane The Spirit of St. Louis, in 1927. It was a single-engine plane and used a lot of fuel. The plane had to be made as light as possible so that it could carry the necessary amount of fuel for the trip. As a result he had to go without a number of safety features. There were no brakes fitted to the plane. There was no radio for him to send or receive important information. He didn't even take a parachute.

The plane had no windscreen. Because of this, when he took off and landed he could only see over the front of the plane by looking through a periscope.

For the trip, Charles took two canteens full of water and five ham sandwiches. He said, "If I get to Paris I won't need any more and if I don't get to Paris I won't need any more either."

The trip took thirty-three hours and thirty minutes.
