Mrs Gunson shut the front door behind her. Gaylene was left to look after little Jack. Seconds later the door opened and Mrs Gun son was back.

"Don't give him anything sweet. It's not good for him." She shut the door again. Only secondslater, she opened it again and called out, "I'll be back in two hours."

Gaylene heard Mrs Gunson's car backing out of the drive. Then it stopped. Gaylene opened the front door.

"You can call me on my cellphone," Mrs Gunson said.

Gaylene nodded. She watched as the finally car disappeared down the street. At last she and the little dog were left alone.

Finding out about her family's history had become Nina's hobby. It had started out as a school project, but she had wanted to continue. As soon as she found out one piece of information she found she wanted to find more.

"Still tracking down our ancestors?" her father asked. "Found anything interesting?"

Nina stopped working on the computer and looked at her father.

"Yes," she said excitedly. "Did you know that in 1866 your great-great-grandfather went to prison? For theft! They shipped him out here. I suppose if it wasn't for him none of us would be here."

4. BLACK BOB

Read the passage, then answer all questions using evidence from the text.

Adam sat at the table with the old man from next door, listening to the story.

"Black Bob was a pirate and he was standing guard while the rest of the crew went robbing and looting." The old man took a cork from his pocket and stood it on the table. "Say this is Black Bob.

He was on the beach, guarding the boat that they'd all come ashore in. Even boats belonging to pirates were likely to be stolen by landlubbers so Bob had to stay there."

A pocket knife was placed beside the cork. "And this is the boat."

"There were still two pirates on board the ship that was anchored out in the bay." A bus ticket became the ship, just in front of Adam.

"While the pirates were busy, Black Bob, down on the beach, waited. He remembered his life before he was a pirate; how good it was. That got him thinking.

He waited some more.

He decided he'd had enough of being a pirate, so he rowed back to the ship." He put the cork on top of the pocket knife and moved them across to the bus ticket.

"Bob told the others that he was leaving, and taking the ship with him. He told them that they could come too, or get in the boat and join the others on shore."

Adam looked at up.

"Well? What did they do?"

He put the bus ticket and the cork back in his pocket.

"They came with me. They just call me Bob now."
