Grandmothers are full of good advice. They can't resist any opportunity to tell the younger generation 'Sit up straight' or 'Don't put your elbows on the table' or 'If you're nice to them, they'll be nice to you.'

Thinking back to the times she spent with her grandmother, Pauline could remember her only ever giving one piece of advice. When she was a child, she had often stayed with her grandparents and she had to eat food that she didn't have at home. This was when Gran offered her advice. It was 'If you don't try it, you'll never know if you like it.' She had to eat black pudding because Granddad liked it.

Once, Gran had put mushrooms and broccoli in the macaroni cheese because the vegetables needed to be used up. Pauline had shut her eyes and eaten a mouthful. To her surprise it tasted alright. It wasn't something she'd want to eat every day, but it wasn't horrible.

Now, although those times were long behind her and Pauline was travelling the world, Gran's words came back to her. She was sitting cross-legged on the ground in a village in East Africa, looking at the dish of fried scorpions on her knees. Smiling at her hosts, she lifted one to her mouth.
