Riding bareback at full gallop was frightening for a young. inexperienced rider like me. When we got to the river the horse immediately stopped. I didn't.

Bob trotted along beside Dave. Suddenly there was a bark and a flash of white and Bob was gone, racing across the road. Before Dave fully realised what was happening there was a screech of brakes and a dull thud.

The light shone briefly on him. then moved on, and he was in darkness again. As he walked through the gloom to his front door, the only sound in the still night, other than his footsteps, was the washing of the waves that encircled his world. He was bathed in fight again. By the time he reached the door, he had been illuminated no less than five times.

In the morning, fishing rod in his hand. he climbed down to his favourite place on the rocks, intending to spend an hour or two there. He could see a launch in the distance and he looked up every now and then, following its progress until it disappeared from his view around the point.

Large ships, yachts and launches of all sizes often passed his isolated home, but the rocks meant that attempting a landing could be dangerous. You had to be a special person to live this sort of life, he reflected happily, as he pulled in another fish.
