The wind was so strong that if you leant into it, it would hold you up. Jason was doing this when the wind suddenly died down. As his mother cleaned the graze on his knee, Jason told her what had happened. She laughed at the story.

Shane put the bread in the toaster, pushed the lever down and went on reading his book. Ten minutes later Tessa came into the kitchen. She looked at the toaster and flicked the switch on at the wall. It wasn't long before the toast was ready.

About a thousand years ago a great number of castles were built in Europe. Many people and their animals lived in the castles.

They were not pleasant places to live in compared to modern houses. The windows were just open slits in the thick stone walls. Even though it made the rooms stuffy and dark, shutters could be put over the slits in bad weather. Tapestry wall hangings were used in an attempt to keep in any warmth that came from the great open fires, but there were no carpets or rugs on the floor.

The people ate with their fingers and threw bones and leftovers onto the floor Straw was occasionally scattered about. Although this helped soak up the grease, the floors sometimes caught fire. The food scraps would often be eaten by dogs, or mice that lived in the flea-ridden straw. These floors were also beds for the poorest people.
