As Jill worked, she hummed softly to herself. Just one bin to go and then she would start on the vacuuming. Things were going well. At this rate she would be home before her kids were up for breakfast.

By the time we reached the small village the sun was going down. After so long on the road we were glad to be able to take off our boots and rub our sore feet.

Monarch butterflies lay their eggs on the underside of the swan plant. There the eggs can grow, safe from the wind and sun. When they hatch, the tiny caterpillars eat their egg shells. Then they start to eat the leaves of the plant they are on.

They eat all the time and grow quickly. As they grow, they shed their skins many times because the skin does not stretch to fit the new body. When they have finished growing, the caterpillars make cocoons and hang upside down from a leaf or the stem of the plant.

While they are inside their cocoons many changes take place. As these things happen the cocoons change colour from light to dark green.

After about three weeks the butterfly is ready to hatch. At first, the new butterfly is weak and unable to move, but it slowly gains strength and is able to fly away.
