Inferencing · Level 1

Tears ran down the baby's red face. The noise filled the house. A full bottle lay dripping onto the floor.

I had been waiting for ten minutes. I suddenly realised I had forgotten to put my homework in my bag. By the time I got back the bus was gone.

As she did every week, Mrs. Low sat on the couch sewing buttons onto her sons' shirts. The boys were always playing rough games.

On the floor, baby Hannah was playing happily with her toys. The phone rang, and as Mrs Low quickly got up to answer it, she spilled the contents of the button container.

While she, was on the phone Hannah crawled over to see what had happened. When Mrs Low finished her conversation she picked up the buttons from the floor. She then noticed that Hannah was very quiet. Suddenly, Hannah began to cough and her face turned red. Thinking the worst, Mrs Low scooped the baby into her arms and rushed out the door.

When the boys arrived home from school they found the house was empty. They were watching TV when their mother came in, holding Hannah in her arms.

"I've been at the medical centre," Mrs Low explained. "I thought that Hannah had swallowed a button. When the doctor undressed her, there was a button in the fold of her T-shirt."

They laughed and turned back to the TV.
