Looking up at all the skyscrapers, Angela instructed Kay to "Go into Alf's news agency over there and buy a map of the city."
She looked around for a seat. "It's the only way we'll ever find it. I know it's around here somewhere. When King Kong climbed up it in the original movie, it was the tallest building in the world."
Kay crossed the road and disappeared through the dark doorway. A few minutes later she came out and handed the map to Angela who opened it, spreading it out on her knees.
The two friends had arrived for their short holiday in New York and had set out on foot to see as much as they could.
Angela clicked her tongue and said, "Oh!" softly, as if to herself. "Well, it's quite a few blocks from here. Quite a walk. Here, look."
Kay studied the map. She found where they were at the moment and traced a path to their destination with her eyes. She looked back at the starting point.
"Well," she said cheerfully, looking down at her feet. "It's OK, I'm wearing the right shoes." "I've just had a thought," she said. "I could have saved six dollars by just asking Alf."
After a short silence, during which Angela folded the map carefully placing the segment that they would need on the outside, she had another thought.
"I think it's amazing that we couldn't find the Empire State Building."
