# Supplemental Lesson 14: Great Barrier Reef Teacher Guide ## Package purpose This lesson preserves Lesson 14's work with contrasting perspectives, overlap and evidence boundaries. Students research one shared environmental issue, compare two protection lenses and write an evidence-based persuasive brief. ## The central distinction The two protection lenses are **different in scale and priority**, not enemies. - **Local-resilience lens:** reduce current pressures, improve conditions and help the Reef recover. - **Climate-action lens:** reduce the largest long-term threat driving widespread marine heatwaves and bleaching. - **Overlap:** both seek a living, resilient Reef and both depend on evidence, management and sustained action. Avoid asking, “Which lens is correct?” Ask, “What does each lens make us notice, and what priority can the evidence defend?” ## Reading answer guide ### Key evidence students may identify **Reef scale and significance** - The Great Barrier Reef extends about 2,300 kilometres and covers approximately 344,400 square kilometres. - It includes roughly 3,000 coral reefs and many connected habitats. - About 70 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Traditional Owner groups hold continuing connections and responsibilities for Great Barrier Reef Sea Country. **Current condition** - The severe 2024 mass bleaching event had the largest spatial footprint recorded on the Great Barrier Reef. - AIMS surveyed 124 reefs between August 2024 and May 2025. - Regional average hard coral cover declined by about 14-30% relative to 2024 levels. - Living coral remained across all three monitored regions. - In the 124-reef sample, 48% of reefs declined, 42% had no net change and 10% increased. - Summer 2024-25 brought the sixth widespread bleaching event since 2016 and the second in consecutive summers. **Bleaching** - Corals under stress can expel algae from their tissues and turn white. - Bleached coral is stressed, not automatically dead. - Recovery depends on the severity and duration of the stress and on time without another major disturbance. - More frequent marine heatwaves shorten recovery opportunities. **Threats** - Human-induced climate change is the primary threat. - Poor water quality can harm Reef ecosystems and worsen their ability to recover. - Other pressures include crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks, fishing impacts, marine debris, cyclones and flood plumes. **Responses** - Climate action is necessary to reduce the warming pressure driving mass bleaching. - Better catchment water quality can strengthen resilience. - Local management can address starfish outbreaks, fishing impacts, marine debris and habitat pressures. - Traditional Owner Sea Country management combines continuing custodianship, cultural knowledge and contemporary science. - Restoration and adaptation research may support recovery, but does not remove the need to address climate change. ## Cause-chain answer > Human activities increase greenhouse gases → oceans warm → marine heatwaves become more frequent or intense → coral experiences heat stress → coral expels algae → coral bleaches → the coral may recover or die depending on severity and duration → repeated disturbances reduce recovery time. Accept shorter versions when the causal relationships remain accurate. ## Evidence-boundary answers ### “The whole Great Barrier Reef is dead.” **Contradicted overclaim.** Monitoring found living coral across all three regions, although coral cover declined substantially. ### “Improving water quality can help the Reef recover from disturbances.” **Supported.** The scientific consensus states that improving water quality is essential for Reef resilience and recovery. ### “Local protection work is pointless unless climate change is solved first.” **Unsupported overclaim.** Climate change is the primary threat, but local actions reduce other pressures and help build resilience. ### “A complete protection plan needs work at more than one scale.” **Reasonable synthesis.** This conclusion combines evidence about the primary global threat with evidence about useful local management. Do not accept a position that: - erases the primary climate threat; - dismisses local work as useless; - claims all coral is dead; - promises immediate or complete recovery; - invents facts, costs or public agreement. ## Feedback prompts - Which sentence contains the strongest evidence-and-meaning pair? - Where does the writer explain rather than merely list? - Is the other protection lens represented in terms its supporters would recognise? - Which noun group makes a threat, place or affected group more exact? - Which verb shows cause or action precisely? - Where does certainty exceed the source evidence? - What can be qualified without weakening the recommendation? ## Source refresh checklist Before teaching in a later year: 1. Check the newest AIMS annual coral-condition summary. 2. Check the newest Reef Snapshot. 3. Update only time-sensitive survey numbers and event counts. 4. Retain stable explanations of bleaching, resilience, water quality and protection scale unless authoritative guidance changes. 5.
