# Supplemental Lesson 14: One Reef, Two Protection Lenses ## Lesson purpose Students read a current evidence briefing about the Great Barrier Reef, compare two legitimate protection perspectives and write a persuasive protection brief for Australian environmental decision-makers. The lesson preserves Lesson 14's focus on contrasting viewpoints and evidence boundaries while moving completely away from the novel. ## Central teaching diagnosis Students can easily produce an urgent slogan about protecting the Reef without understanding the problem, representing another perspective fairly or distinguishing evidence from overclaim. This lesson therefore makes research, comparison and evidence checking necessary steps before persuasion. ## Curriculum focus - **Year 5 - AC9E5LA06: understand how grammatical and vocabulary choices expand description and viewpoint.** - **Year 6 - AC9E6LA06: understand how verb and adverb choices expand ideas and character perspective.** ## Learning intention We are learning to use evidence and precise language to represent two protection perspectives fairly, then persuade an audience to act. ## Success criteria - I can retrieve and explain important evidence from an authoritative reading. - I can distinguish a supported claim, a reasonable inference and an overclaim. - I can compare a local-resilience perspective with a climate-action perspective. - I can identify where the two perspectives overlap and where their priorities differ. - I can use purposeful noun groups, verbs and adverbials to make a protection argument precise. - I can write an 8-10 sentence protection brief that uses evidence, acknowledges another perspective and recommends action. - I can revise one unsupported, vague or unfair claim. ## Finished workbook response An 8-10 sentence **Great Barrier Reef Protection Brief** addressed to Australian environmental decision-makers. The brief must include: - a clear protection claim and priority; - at least three accurate pieces of evidence from the reading; - a fair explanation of both protection lenses; - one sentence of concession or qualification; - a concrete call to action; - one visible revision. **Year 5 evidence:** at least three purposeful expanded noun groups that clarify a place, affected group, threat or response. **Year 6 evidence:** at least three precise verbs and two purposeful adverbial details that clarify cause, consequence, scale or action. ## Protection lenses ### Lens A: strengthen the Reef locally This perspective prioritises actions that reduce pressures the Reef experiences now. Examples include improving water quality flowing from catchments, controlling crown-of-thorns starfish, supporting sustainable fishing, reducing marine debris, protecting habitats, partnering with Traditional Owners and testing restoration or adaptation methods. ### Lens B: address the largest long-term threat This perspective prioritises strong action on climate change because warming oceans and more frequent marine heatwaves drive mass coral bleaching. It argues that local actions can improve resilience, but cannot by themselves stop the ocean heating that causes widespread bleaching. ### Honest overlap Both perspectives seek a healthier, more resilient Reef. They differ mainly in scale and priority, not in whether the Reef deserves protection. A strong persuasive response can identify one priority without pretending the other work is useless. ## Agreed delivery model - Teacher controls the projected HTML presentation. - Students read `Lesson_14_GBR_Reading_Pack.docx`. - Students record research and planning in `Lesson_14_GBR_Organiser.docx`. - Prepare `Lesson_14_GBR_Accessible_Pack.docx` where appropriate. - Students complete substantial composition in their English workbooks. - The deck contains no student composition fields. - Core route: approximately 60 minutes. - Optional depth activities may extend the lesson towards 75 minutes. - All Reef facts in the student reading are original summaries of the authoritative sources listed below. ## Preparation - Open `Lesson_14_GBR_Persuasive_Presentation.html` in a modern browser and select fullscreen. - Print the reading pack and organiser. - Prepare the accessible pack where appropriate. - Students need a highlighter or two coloured pencils and their English workbook. - Decide whether the class will address the Australian Government generally or use the more specific audience: **Australian environmental decision-makers**. - Do not require students to undertake live internet research during the lesson; the curated reading provides the common evidence base. ## Core sequence ### 1. The Reef is not one story - 3 minutes Display two true statements: > The Reef still contains living coral across all three monitored regions. > > Recent bleaching and other pressures caused substantial coral loss. Students decide whether both statements can be true and explain their reasoning. - **Student action:** Think, pair, justify; no reading pack yet. - **Finished when:** One spoken explanation that holds both ideas together. - **Teacher note:** This is the conceptual hook. Reject the false choice between “the Reef is fine” and “the Reef is already gone”. - **Misconception revealed:** Complex environmental conditions must have one simple story. ### 2. Your mission: advise, do not advertise - 2 minutes Introduce the final audience and product. > You are preparing a short evidence briefing for people who make environmental decisions. They need a clear recommendation, not an unsupported slogan. - **Student action:** Partner rehearsal; complete “My audience will need to know ___ before they can support action.” - **Finished when:** One information need named. - **Teacher note:** Students should feel the need for the reading before they begin it. ### 3. Read the Reef evidence briefing - 8 minutes Students read the briefing independently or with a partner. Use two annotation codes: - **E** = evidence about the Reef's current condition or threats; - **A** = an action that could protect or strengthen the Reef. Students must also box one sentence that prevents an oversimplified argument. - **Student action:** Independent or paired reading; Reading Pack. - **Finished when:** At least four E annotations, three A annotations and one boxed nuance sentence. - **Teacher note:** The boxed sentence will often concern bleaching not always meaning death, remaining coral cover, or local action helping without replacing climate action. ### 4. Build an evidence ledger - 4 minutes Students transfer three evidence items into the organiser: 1. one fact about current condition; 2. one fact about a major threat; 3. one fact about a possible response. For each, they paraphrase what the evidence means rather than copying a statistic alone. - **Student action:** Independent; Organiser: Evidence Ledger. - **Finished when:** Three facts and three “This matters because…” notes. - **Teacher note:** Check that students preserve the source meaning. A number without its comparison or timeframe is not yet usable evidence. ### 5. Trace the bleaching cause chain - 4 minutes Students sequence: > warming oceans → marine heatwave → coral heat stress → algae expelled → coral bleaches → recovery or death depends on severity and time They then add: > repeated disturbances → less recovery time - **Student action:** Pairs; Organiser: Cause Chain. - **Finished when:** Complete chain and one because/therefore explanation. - **Teacher note:** Emphasise that a bleached coral is stressed, not automatically dead. Repeated heat stress changes the risk. ### 6. Read through two protection lenses - 5 minutes Pairs reread the action section and sort responses by the main job they perform: - **local resilience:** reduce current pressures or help recovery; - **climate action:** reduce the long-term warming pressure; - **both / connected:** actions or claims that explain why both scales matter. - **Student action:** Pairs; Organiser: Two-Lens Board. - **Finished when:** At least two actions in each main lens and one connected idea. - **Teacher note:** Some actions can be defended in more than one place. Require the relationship students see rather than enforcing a mechanical one-right-answer sort. ### 7. Where do the perspectives agree—and where do they differ? - 4 minutes Students complete: > Both lenses agree that ___. > > The local-resilience lens prioritises ___ because ___. > > The climate-action lens prioritises ___ because ___. - **Student action:** Independent, then compare; Organiser. - **Finished when:** One overlap and two accurate priority statements. - **Teacher note:** This transfers Lesson 14's overlap-and-difference reasoning into an environmental policy context. ### 8. Evidence, inference—or overclaim? - 4 minutes Students classify and justify these claims: 1. “The whole Great Barrier Reef is dead.” 2. “Improving water quality can help the Reef recover from disturbances.” 3. “Local protection work is pointless unless climate change is solved first.” 4. “A complete protection plan needs work at more than one scale.” Suggested classification: - 1: contradicted overclaim; - 2: supported; - 3: unsupported overclaim; - 4: reasonable synthesis or inference supported by multiple sections. - **Student action:** Independent first; class comparison. - **Finished when:** Four labels and one written justification. - **Teacher note:** The difficult boundary is claim 4. It is not a direct quotation or single fact; it is a defensible synthesis of the evidence. ### 9. Make each perspective precise - 4 minutes Compare: > We should fix local problems. > > Governments should urgently reduce polluted runoff entering vulnerable inshore reefs. And: > We should act on climate change. > > Australia should rapidly reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that intensify marine heatwaves. Students identify how noun groups, verbs and adverbials clarify: - who should act; - what exact pressure is addressed; - where, how or with what urgency; - what result the action is meant to produce. - **Student action:** Whole class model; then improve one vague action sentence. - **Finished when:** One precise revision and one language-choice annotation. - **Teacher note:** Precise wording must remain evidence-based. “Eliminate all bleaching immediately” is forceful but not defensible. ### 10. Read the model like an adviser - 5 minutes Read the complete model before annotating: > **Protect the Reef at Two Scales** > > Australian environmental decision-makers should protect the Great Barrier Reef through strong climate action and immediate local resilience work. Recent monitoring found substantial coral-cover declines after the severe 2024 bleaching event, while living coral remained across all three monitored regions. This evidence shows both danger and a reason to act. Improving water quality, managing crown-of-thorns starfish and supporting Traditional Owner Sea Country management can reduce pressures on vulnerable reef habitats now. However, these valuable local programs cannot stop the marine heatwaves driven by a warming climate. Australia must therefore reduce greenhouse gas emissions while continuing practical Reef protection. Although the two approaches work at different scales, they share one purpose: giving coral communities more opportunity to survive and recover. Decision-makers should fund both, while treating climate action as the essential long-term priority. Students identify: - claim and priority; - three evidence-based ideas; - fair representation of both lenses; - concession or qualification; - concrete call to action; - purposeful language choices. - **Student action:** Whole class annotated model; star one move to imitate. - **Finished when:** Five persuasive moves found and one starred. - **Teacher note:** The model prioritises climate action but does not dismiss local work. Students may defend another emphasis if their evidence and reasoning remain accurate. ### 11. Write the Great Barrier Reef Protection Brief - 10 minutes Students write 8-10 sentences for Australian environmental decision-makers. - **Student action:** Independent and silent; English workbook. - **Finished when:** Complete brief with claim, evidence, both perspectives, qualification and action. - **Teacher note:** Students may use the model's architecture but must select and explain their own evidence. ### 12. Run the evidence-and-fairness test - 4 minutes Partners respond: > Your strongest evidence is ___ because ___. > > The other perspective is represented fairly / unfairly because ___. Writers revise one unsupported, vague or unfair sentence immediately. - **Student action:** Partner feedback, then independent revision. - **Finished when:** Two feedback statements and one visible revision. - **Teacher note:** Reviewers diagnose. Writers retain control of the position and wording. ### 13. State the priority without erasing the other lens - 2 minutes Students complete: > Although ___ matters because ___, decision-makers should prioritise ___ because the evidence shows ___. - **Student action:** Independent exit evidence; organiser or workbook. - **Finished when:** One complete, evidence-based qualification sentence. - **Teacher note:** Use this sentence to diagnose whether students can maintain both contrast and overlap. ## Optional depth activities ### Depth A: Change the decision-maker - 8 minutes Students adapt one paragraph for: - a coastal council focused on local water quality and marine debris; or - the Australian Government focused on national climate and Reef policy. They explain which evidence and language choices changed. - **Student action:** Independent, then compare. - **Finished when:** Two audience-specific versions and one explanation. - **Teacher note:** This extends audience control rather than adding volume. ### Depth B: Challenge the false choice - 7 minutes Students respond to: > “We must choose between local Reef projects and climate action.” They write a three-sentence rebuttal that acknowledges cost or priority decisions while rejecting the oversimplification. - **Student action:** Pairs; workbook margin. - **Finished when:** Claim, qualification and evidence-based rebuttal. - **Teacher note:** Extension lies in policy nuance and reasoning, not emotional intensity. ## Support - Preteach: **coral cover, bleaching, marine heatwave, resilience, catchment, runoff, emissions**. - Allow paired reading and alternate paragraphs between readers. - Provide the three evidence categories before reading so students know what to seek. - Highlight the sentence containing each key statistic for students who need reduced visual search. - Use a partially completed cause chain. - Offer this optional briefing frame: > Decision-makers should protect the Reef by ___. > > The reading shows ___, which means ___. > > Local actions such as ___ can ___. > > However, climate action matters because ___. > > Although ___, ___. > > Therefore, decision-makers should ___. - Permit a 6-sentence brief while preserving evidence, both perspectives and qualification. ## Accessible Pathway (ICP) - Use `Lesson_14_GBR_Accessible_Pack.docx`. - Read the simplified evidence page aloud or with a partner. - Preserve four key ideas: 1. the Reef is alive but under serious pressure; 2. hot water can bleach coral; 3. local actions can help coral cope and recover; 4. climate action is needed to reduce the largest long-term threat. - Allow pointing, choosing, speaking, copying or scribing. - Build one local-action sentence and one climate-action sentence before choosing the final request. - Suggested final response: > Please protect the Great Barrier Reef. Hotter ocean water is bleaching many corals. Cleaner water and careful Reef management can help coral recover. Climate action is also needed because local projects cannot stop marine heatwaves. Please use both kinds of protection and act now. ## Extension - Require students to distinguish direct evidence from a synthesis across sources. - Ask students to qualify a statistic by naming its timeframe, surveyed sample or regional variation. - Require a counterargument about feasibility, scale or priority. - Allow an alternative priority only when both perspectives are represented accurately. ## Formative assessment and next teaching response - **Opening paradox:** reveals binary thinking about environmental condition. - **Reading annotations:** show whether students can separate evidence from response. - **Evidence ledger:** reveals copying without interpretation. - **Cause chain:** exposes misconceptions about bleaching and coral death. - **Two-lens board:** makes perspective selection visible. - **Evidence-boundary task:** reveals overclaim and unsupported certainty. - **Model annotation:** transfers research decisions into persuasive structure. - **Peer test:** checks evidence strength and fairness before final revision. - **Exit sentence:** samples the central goal of contrast, overlap and prioritisation.
