The house stood back from the vines. It had many levels. The whitewashed stone walls rose directly for two storeys above the ground. Above the second storey, inset by about a metre, was a row of thin rectangular windows. These belonged to a low-ceilinged attic. Then on the flat roof above the attic there was a small room, with its own roof and windows on all four sides.

To make a crispy caper dressing, you must heat a frying pan over medium to high heat. Add oil, capers and lemon zest and cook until crisp - about 4 minutes. Take the pan off the heat and add dill and pepper. Allow to cool. This is a delicious dressing for lightly pouring overfish or salad.
