After the main courses have been cooked, it's a great idea to use the glowing barbecue coals to make a tasty dessert. Any fruit can be cooked to perfection by the following method. First, sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon. Then wrap in foil and place on the coals fora short time.

2. LONELY BEACH

It was a wild place. Everywhere the power of the sea could be seen and heard. The pounding of the waves was deafening. As the waves rolled back the pebbles rattled noisily. Tree trunks littered the beach, tossed there by the sea. The beach sloped up to the foot of towering cliffs. Somehow small bushes, bent by the wind, clung to them. The cliffs stretched as far as I could see. They were broken only by the narrow gully that had been carved by a stream. It was the only way to get down here. The wind swept a misty rain and sea-spray across the beach. It was time to leave this lonely place. I made my way back to where I'd come from.

3. CARD GAME

The game was finished. They had been playing for matches. Dan had lost all of his. He had thought he would have been a much better card player than Mark. He was older. He'd learned a few tricks off his older sister that Mark couldn't possibly know. He should have won. Instead, he had lost all three games. Even though it was all in fun, he couldn't help feeling annoyed.

Mark's grandmother asked to join in. "I love playing cards. It's been ages since I played."

Dan readily agreed to include her. This was a way of winning a game.

Twenty minutes later, Dan had lost another game. Mark's grandmother had won all the matches.

As Mark said, "Two days is ages to her. And she always won when she was teaching me."

Dear Jean,

In your email you asked for directions to our place.

You'll need to check with the bus company to see which bus you have to get. Depending on the time of day, you can get either a Number 26 or a Number 19.

If you get a Number 26, you get off at the Stratton Road stop. You'll see another road directly opposite the bus stop. That's Browning Road. Walk up it until you reach the old post office by the bookshop and the butcher, and just past.it is Armenia Road. We are the third house on the left hand side down this road. Number 6. It's brick with a green gate.

If you get a Number 19, you get off at the top end of our road. You just have to walk back past about six houses to our place.

We are looking forward to your visit. As you know, my husband had lost contact with the branch of his family living in England. So we are dying to see the wedding photos that you are bringing. You must have had a great time when you were there. We are still amazed how your son married one of Bob's relations over there and made it possible for him to be in contact again. As they say, it's a small world.

I wrote straight away to Willie and June and will write to the others as I get the time.
