My great-grandfather always grew beautiful peas. His children liked to ask him how he grew them so well. He would tell them with great detail, his eyes twinkling as he did. The children would turn their noses up and say "yuck!"

In the old days bread and milk used to be delivered by horse and cart. The horses always left a mess in the streets. But it never stayed long on the street where my great-grandfather lived. He'd go out with a spade and bucket and scoop up what the horses had left. He put this into a big drum full of water. Every now and then he would stir the mixture. It smelt bad. When it was ready he'd pour some of the mixture around the growing plants. They loved it. They grew tall and strong. Today my grandfather lives next door to some horse stables and he uses the same mixture for his vegetables that his father used.

The eighteen-wheeled truck was building up speed. Eric always enjoyed doing this. For fifty kilometres the road was flat with long straights - only six easy bends over the whole distance. Here he could make up for the time he'd lost driving the over the winding hill roads.

On the first straight Eric passed one truck and two cars going the other way. Apart from that the road was empty the whole way, although every now and then there were the lights of farmhouses.

Eric felt that there was no-one else in the world. He liked the feeling.

'POSTER COMPETITION' the sign said. The little church in the town was going to have a gala day and wanted posters to tell people when it was and what sort of things would be happening. For Win's age group the prizes were $30 for first place and $20 for second. She decided to enter the competition. She enjoyed drawing and she wanted to help. She knew that anything drawn by her would not be good enough to win a prize.

The sign listed the things that could be put on the poster. For hers, she chose the ferris wheel, the cake stall, the go-kart rides and the junk stall. The hard thing was getting the letters of the words right. They had to be large and bright. This was because people had to read them from a distance. That wasn't the only reason. The piece of paper that she had been given for the poster was huge. She filled up the rest of it with drawings.

To her surprise, she won $20. She was so proud of herself. She thought she must be a good artist after all. She changed her mind about that when she found out there had only been two posters entered for her age group.
